Base On Moon in 2024

NASA Airs Its Plan for a Moon Base by 2024

by Nell Greenfieldboyce
NPR.ORG

NASA announces plans to build a moon base that would house a new generation of lunar explorers. The plan calls for a return to the moon by 2020, with a rudimentary base camp established by 2024. But the ambitious plan faces some stiff technical and political challenges.

Two years ago, President Bush announced a new vision for NASA. As soon as the agency finished building the international space station, he said, it should return to the moon. To do that, NASA has been designing rockets that it calls "Apollo on steroids."

But the goal of this moon shot will be different than Apollo.

Scott Horowitz, NASA's head of exploration, says "a lunar base will be the central theme, for going back to the moon in preparation to go to Mars and beyond."

NASA decided it needed a moon base after it spent months studying how to best explore the lunar surface. Horowitz called it a "very, very big decision."

The space agency doesn't have a design for the outpost yet. But the best bet is that a lunar base would look something like a dusty trailer park in Anarctica during winter. It would need to have a landing pad, and possibly a parking lot for a rover.

A spot next to a crater would be prime real estate, because the crater's cold, shadowy interior might hide water in the form of ice. And planners are looking at the moon's north and south poles, where there is lots of sunlight: The outpost will run on solar power.

NASA won't select a building site until robotic missions provide better maps of the lunar surface. One mapping mission is planned for 2008. But the goal is that 20 years from now, people will be living on the moon for months at a time.

School Bus Goes 367mph

Jet powered School Bus Goes 367mph

Indy Boys Inc, an Indianapolis-based group of gear-heads, has fitted a jet engine to an iconic yellow school bus. It may not be the fastest ground vehicle out there, but at 367mph and with its 80-foot-long plume of flame, it’s quite the sight.

While it still looks like the kind of bus you and I are used to, Stender estimates that only 5% of the original vehicle is left. The entire thing had to be reworked as a bus would come apart under the pressure put on it by a jet engine like this.

The bus guzzles a whopping 150 gallons of fuel in a quarter of a mile thanks to its 42,000 horsepower jet engine, which was taken from a Phantom fighter jet. Indy Boy Paul Stender, the mastermind of the project, said that while it’s not supposed to get kids to and from school, it is supposed to impress them. “I guess this is my revenge for all those days riding on the slow journey to school, now it goes at my kind of pace,” he said.

“I built the bus for two reasons. The first is to entertain people because, come on, it’s a jet bus,” Stender said, concluding, “The second, is to keep kids off drugs. Jets are hot, drugs are not.”

New Student Visa Rules for UK from Aug 12, 2010

From August 12, 2010, the UK Border Agency (UKBA) will implement secure English Language tests for students under Tier 4 (General) of the points-based system. According to UKBA, student visa applicants who are studying courses below degree level, excluding foundation degrees and English Language courses have to take the test. This test must be taken with a UKBA-approved provider before the applicant applies for a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the education sponsor.

Applicants who are intending to study a foundation degree or at degree level (NQF level 6) and above, or an English Language course, are not required to take the secure English Language test before applying for a visa. Education providers may, however , require students to provide evidence of English Language proficiency to ensure they are capable of following the course for which they have applied.
